Make sure you take a little time choosing a computer repair company.

Have you ever wondered how you can know you’re picking the right computer repair company?

Do you want to make sure you are getting the best value for your dollar for your computer repair services?

Did you ever have a tech come out to fix your system just to tell you that you needed to buy a new computer without even really trying to fix yours?

Getting your computer repaired quickly and at an economic price is essential and making the right choice when choosing your computer repair service provider is the first measure in meeting this goal.

The sad fact is, that all too often, a person goes through a few hard experiences before they find a good computer repair technician or company.

What most people find out after finally getting a computer repair company or technician they like is the one with the most experience is the one they preferred.

Hi, I’m Bill Arnoldi, founder and owner of FireBall Tech Computer Repair in Tucson, Arizona.

In the next several paragraphs I will share with you some very helpful information and why it is important to know.

During my 16 year plus career in the computer technology industry, I found that when I employed new employees, I would invariably get the better employees from those candidates that had a resume of long-term hands-on experience in the tech skill for which I was recruiting. All too frequently, and nearly without fail, after hiring prospects that were fresh or recently out of schooling with all their certifications and degrees, the employees would come either to myself or one of the ranking I.T. managers to solve even the most elementary of problems.

So why did this occur? The computer repair employees’ lacked knowledge of the fundamental computer repair processes and relationships active in computer technology that enable a person to draw educated decisions to resolve problems. Put simply, they did not understand how things work. And how could they? They had enough of book and lab knowledge, enough of theory, but no real-world practical computer repair knowledge. This knowledge can only come from years of experience.

It should be noted that this was not the rule, but was the case in the majority of circumstances. There were decidedly the special gems that persevered so hard to solve a tcomputer repair problem, never giving up, researching, making repeated tries, and finally resolving the problem whilst gleaming that knowledge they needed along the way. But in general, the greatest outcomes we ever measured came from those with a lot of hands-on and subjective computer repair experience.

Okay, so you may be wondering where this is all leading to tips for computer repair choices.

Well, in effect, when you, the consumer, select a company to provide you with computer computer repair support service, you are employing them just as you would an employee for yourself. And with that in mind, you want to make sure you engage someone with experience to get the job done properly and at a fair price.

Something that I have experienced over the numerous years I have been in the technology industry is the vendor or supplier, and sometimes the computer repair employee that routinely rushes to the decision that the only solution to the technical problem is to upgrade or buy new equipment. That instantly becomes a cause for concern for me when this happens. I begin to question their competency in being able to supply me with dependable computer repair service and wonder if they have an ulterior motive. Sometimes I question if their actual objective is just to get me to buy new stuff from them, not always holding my best financial interests in mind. Sure, sometimes it does make sense to invest in upgraded equipment, but it should make good economical sense in the long run. To rapidly form such a determination that cannot generally be arrived at without first putting forth an effort to properly diagnose and troubleshoot the computer repair problem is unreliable. When that attempt is not obvious to me, I am highly suspect of a recommendation to drop money on new equipment, as should any prudent individual.

This is similar to numerous experiences that my own customers have conveyed to me where they likewise have had a computer repair service supplier race to recommend that they buy new or upgraded equipment. Sometimes, it was discovered, and too often, that the service provider had an stake in selling the new equipment or service either through some commission agreement or revenue sharing arrangement. In essence, this motivated the computer repair service provider to sell rather than fix equipment, and oftentimes when it was not needed.

Try to find a computer repair service provider that practices frugality and works to avoid unneeded costs and waste. Often all a person can afford is barely what they require to get by on. The service provider you pick out should work with you and your economical requirements.

The personality of the computer repair technician you select is significant as well.. A company’s service personnel should be very approachable and genuine and present professional and trustworthy demeanor. If you have ever dealt with some companies, particularly the big chain ones, then you may have experienced a tech that made you feel ignorant or inferior, or was intimidating to you. That’s regrettable. Technicians are there to supply you with great computer repair service, not to inflate their own self-worth by exhibiting some kind of superiority complex about their accomplished expertise. Look for experienced and knowledgeable computer repair technicians doing their best to help you out and explain things in common terminology to help you understand what’s going on. Stuff occurs to computers, its simply a fact of life. It even occurs to the best computer repair technicians in the business and even to me personally. So don’t feel bad when it does, and avoid those self-important ego-driven tech people.

Keep a look out for computer repair guarantees that in essence state that you will not be charged if it cannot be fixed. It sounds fantastic to the client as a way to make sure they are going to get something in return for their money, and it is a great merchandising line for the company, but if it were truly implemented at face value, the company would risk losing lots of revenue. So, then, you may wonder why, do you find those types of computer repair guarantees being offered? First of all, I suggest you read the small print. You will have to sign a computer repair service agreement and there may be something in there that spells out precisely how that “guarantee” applies. In general practice, these guarantees expect the client to accept any solution that the technician proposes to solve the trouble, even up to and including demanding them to purchase completely new equipment. And therein lies their “fix”, as in the phrase, “If we can’t fix it… Get it? Then, if the client declines the computer repair fix, the guarantee does not apply. The guarantee looks great on the surface, but it is an unrealistic outlook for the customer and of the computer repair technician. Let’s get real here. The company cannot afford to run the risk of lost revenues, particularly in a market where competition is high and profits are marginal. If a tech comes out on-site or provides any form of service at all, expect to pay something, no matter what the outcome. It just shouldn’t be an excessive amount.

Not all technical issues are fixed as easily as we expect. After all, a computer repair tech never really knows how bad the problem is or what the cause is until he can actually get his hands on the equipment and diagnose it. Once he figures out the problem, it may not be worth the expense to fix it. And, it will usually cost to have a tech arrive at that determination. Anticipate to pay a diagnostic or troubleshooting fee in these instances. After all, you were still supplied with service to ensure what is required to be completed to remedy the problem. When selecting a computer repair company or technician, make certain to know the fee schedule under these circumstances. Numerous companies will even credit a portion or all of the diagnostic fees towards future business or the purchase of new equipment from them if so decided by the client. If they do not extend any sort of fee credit, then the fee should be nominal, usually an amount adequate to address the company’s expense of dispatching a tech out to the client.

Mileage charges are common for on-site computer repair support.. Of Course this is because time is money, and the computer repair company has to pay expenses of the technician by the hour, irrespective of whether they are being productive on-site or just sitting around in traffic. Factor in the mileage or travel fees into the other fees to see what kind of deal you are getting.

Finally, I want to convey to you, that you should pick out a computer repair company or technician that will empower you with the ability to help keep the problem from occurring once more. If the reason can be found, the computer repair technician should explain what measures, if any, that can be taken to perhaps prevent recurrence. Sure, they could take your money for another on-site call for the identical trouble at a subsequent date when it repeats, and do that over and over, but that would be unethical and downright reprobate in my judgment. Search for a computer repair company or technician happy to help you with an ounce of prevention through some hints so you can save the pound of cure in expense later.

The bottom line is this. When picking out a computer repair company or technician, do a little inquiry. Ask them questions, how long have they been around? What is their background? Google them on the Internet. Look up the names of the principles of the company. Get testimonials from friends or associates. However you do it, just do it before determining on whom to hire for computer repair.

In closing, I hope you heard this information usable in helping you to pick out a reliable computer repair company or technician. You can likewise find other associated useful computer technology tips at our computer repair website at FireBallTech.com. Thanks for reading, Bill Arnoldi.

Computer Repair FrustrationThis “syndrome” in the computer repair industry ranks near the top of my frustration list of practices by some computer repair technicians.

I am referring to the practice of a few unprofessional computer repair technicians, and even some big company franchises, taking the easy way out to fix a computer by telling the customer that they have to wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything.

Hi, I am Bill Arnoldi, owner of FireBall Tech Computer Repair in Tucson, Arizona. In my mind, I am still trying to figure out how someone can call wiping and reinstalling a “fix” for any computer repair problem. On my list of remedies, that is my last resort. Generally it kind of leaves me feeling a bit defeated. But, since I rarely have to ever do that, I think only 3 or 4 times in the last 18 years, it is not a big issue for me.

So why do so many computer repair technicians find it so easy to resort to destroying the customer’s data and wiping their hard drive as a solution to a computer repair problem? Here are a few of the reasons.

  1. They really do not know how to fix the problem. This is the number one reason. Most of the time this is the computer repair approach most often used by technicians that have little experience in actually troubleshooting and fixing computers, You know who they are. Its the guy, often barely out of high school, that grew up playing with computers and built his own gaming system so he thinks he is an expert at repairing computers, or the person that home studied the certification books and proceeded to get a certificate because he answered all the question right on a piece of paper. Any way it goes, they just don’t have the computer repair experience and this is their only solution. What is worse is they are taking advantage of the customer that is trusting their “expert” conclusion that this is the ONLY solution to their problem, often leaving the customer with a feeling of regret for not having backed up all their data, documents and pictures and losing them because of the reinstall.
  2. Time and money equals profits. It takes longer to troubleshoot and attempt remedial actions on a computer with complicated problems. Often a consumer is looking for the best price for the computer repair. In order to remain competitive and maintain a volume of business, a computer repair company may resort to the wipe and re-install of a computer because it takes significantly less time than actually resolving the issue. Thus, they can make more money by taking the fastest route to getting the computer up and running again. Again, not usually in the customer’s best interest because they end up generally losing their data and having to reinstall all of their software applications on their own.
  3. Laziness. This comprises a little of both of the above plus a poor attiude, but is really self-explanatory. The computer repair tech or the company philosophy is to take the easy way out, avoid possible complications, get the computer out the door repaired, and do so with the least effort, time and expense. It is a “repair mill” mentality. In general, they just don’t care about the customer. Rather, it is all about whatever is easiest and most profitable. Again, the customer becomes an innocent victim of unprofessional business attitudes and practices.

A comment response by a self-proclaimed computer repair guru on a forum posting by another newbie  technician asking “What’s a good turnaround time on computer repair for consumers?” read the following: “It really depends on clientel, If you want to do this in a full time extent, you should be able to do this in about 8 – 12 hours. If you just reimage the computer it shouldn’t take more than 2 hours.” I guess we know how he operates.

A true computer repair technician can resolve nearly any problem without resorting to wiping a hard drive and reinstalling the operating system, also referred to as reimaging a computer. A technician with a genuine concern for the customer’s best interest will use everything in their arsenal to fix a problem before resorting to a total reimaging of a computer system.

In my own Tucson computer repair company, I can site multiple instances wherein a customer brought a computer to me because they were told by another computer repair person that it was necessary to reimage the customer’s computer resulting in total loss of their data, only to find that indeed, it could be fixed without any loss. Yes, sometimes it costs more than reimaging a system due to the longer computer repair processes, but the customer more often than not would rather pay a bit more than lose all their data, and all too often, their precious libraries of family memories on the computer in digital pictures.

My advice to consumers is to ask around and check the reputation of the computer repair tech. Don’t be gullible and easily accept a computer repair technician’s assertion that a total wipe and reinstall of the hard drive is required.

Drill them on the reasons why it is necessary, and what the alternatives are. At the very least, always tell a computer repair person or company that they should contact you for authorization before wiping your hard drive and reimaging your computer. Be aware as well, that many of the large franchise operations use a business model wherein a series of mandated minimal troubleshooting steps are undertaken before the company policy dictates a complete reinstall of the computer is required for computer repair problem resolution.

What you are about to read may alarm you. If you take your computer in for repair, your personal information is at risk of getting into the wrong hands and you can become a victim of identity theft!

Most people don’t think about it, and some take it for granted, but really how safe is your personal information when you take your computer in for repair.

Hi, my name is Bill Arnoldi. I own my own computer repair company and have over 18 years of experience in I.T. management.

This is a question posed to me by both my consumer and corporate customers over the years.

Not every computer repair tech or company adheres to the industry ethical practices of not snooping around on a client’s computer. There are some steps that you can take to minimize your exposure to your personal information and confidential data being compromised, but in general, there is always some risk.

Here are some tips on reducing the chance that your personal information and personal identity stored on your computer will get into unscrupulous hands.

There are really two major components to consider when addressing procedures to increase the security of your personal information when you place your computer in the hands of a computer repair technician or service provider.

The first component is limiting the amount of personal information that you place in computer service provider’s possession when you give them your computer to repair. You can do this by utilizing one or both of these procedures.

Don’t give it to them in the first place. If you can keep your hard drive, take it out of your computer and ask the service technician to use another drive of their own to perform the repair. This really only works when the problem is NOT with your hard drive, such as in data corruption, possible failure, or infection by virus, malware or spyware.

If your computer still boots and you can access your programs, clear all your usernames and passwords from all your programs, messengers, and web browsers. Move all your personal data files to an external backup device like a flash drive or hard drive. Then you can use a utility to securely wipe all the deleted information from your hard drive to make sure it cannot be recovered. Remember, just deleting the information once does not really delete the data, you need special software to completely make the data unrecoverable.

If taking your hard drive out is not an option, try hooking it up to another computer to remove your personal data to another drive temporarily while your computer is in for repair. Also make sure to delete all the temporary files that may contain your personal information, such as the web browser cache, and other temporary file locations.

If none of these procedures are practical for you, then you have to establish confidence and trust in your service provider.

The second component to ensuring your personal information is safe with your computer repair person is determining their integrity and establishing level of trust and comfort with them.

Here are some ways you can feel comfortable with your computer service provider.

Find out how long they have been doing computer repair. The longer the better. In theory, if they were dishonest and lacked integrity, they would probably not be providing services anymore.

What have they been responsible for in the past? If they have experience in providing service to large companies, then they probably have a good track record for protecting customer data because large corporations demand security for their data before they let a person perform repairs on their systems.

What procedures do they have in place to prevent data theft or snooping at their company? This does not necessarily apply to the individual technician where they are the only person performing the computer services, but is more applicable to companies with several techs. They should have policies and protections in place to limit the ability on someone absconding with a client’s data. in truth, these protections are not 100% effective but they can serve as a deterrent. Ultimately, in my opinion the only real sure method would probably be to strip search every tech before they left the premises. That’s not happening, so therein lies a bit of risk regardless of the protections in place.

Obtain testimonials and references. Google them on the Internet. See if there are any complaints about their handling personal information. Get recommendations from friends or seek referrals to a tech that someone else has used successfully.

The sum of all this is that you need to do enough research or inquiries until you feel comfortable handing over your computer with your personal information on it to them.

Utilizing these practices is not foolproof. I cannot stress enough that the only bullet-proof way to ensure your personal information and identity is not compromised except is to make sure the computer repair company does not have access to it in the first place. The reality is that in most cases, this is just not practical or possible, especially where correcting problems on the hard drive to restore functionality is what is required.

Finally, keep in mind that in general the majority of computer repair and service providers are on the up-and-up. There are a few sour grapes in the bunch, but the rest of them are pretty good.

Once in a while you may run into an ad for computer repairs that can be done cheaply or for a flat fee. Those of us who have experienced a system or hard drive crash, virus invasion or some other mishap, will be much attracted to a deal like this. However, once in a while it also pays for you to beware of cheap or flat fee computer repair services.

What can be so bad with a good deal such as this? Is it not advisable to jump at the chance at grab it before it gets away, considering the higher prices charged by others? There are many sides to a story, some good and some bad unfortunately, especially when it comes to this kind of deal.

Mostly new players or those less experienced in the market who would like to cash in nice and fast will give this kind of deal. The law of supply and demand will usually work them as a lower price will definitely encourage a high supply of customers. However before one becomes part of this supply lining up for this deal there are some things that must be taken note of first.

The first thing to do is to look at the advertisement and look for the address where the offer can be availed of. If there is no address and only a phone number is present, then it may seem a bit shady and should be avoided. For starters, why will a legitimate business not want its customers know where it is at? Should it look like a freelancer ad, also be a bit wary as freelancers never give a money back guarantee on their service if at all.

Do ask around your area of work or residence if the service being offered has been availed of. Ask your neighbours, friends or workmates who may have availed of similar type service or the service itself. Ask others who know of similar services that they can recommend if the one you saw makes you a bit edgy.

The next and most practical thing to do is to pass by the location of the service provider itself if you know where it is. If people are beating a path to the establishment door then it may be worth looking into. Once there do ask other customers and get all the details you can as much as possible. On the other hand if the place is very empty then perhaps it is a place to be avoided all together.

The last and most important thing to do is to communicate with the service provider if you can. Do ask as many details as possible on why the service is cheap and try to look for loopholes in the deal. It is up to the provider to provide you as much detail as possible to make you feel assured of the deal.

Finally as an ending note, not all flat fee deals are suspicious or to be totally avoided. There is that rare occasion you may bump into a genuine deal. The only way you can tell if it is real or not will be to follow the steps outlined above.

A computer that is broken in the home or office, is one that will need to be fixed. Many people value their computing devices and are unsure as to where to leave them when they are broken. There are many services who claim to know how to fix computer issues. When a shop is found, there may be Questions to ask a computer repair technician before you hire them. These concerns will help a computer owner know if the computer shop is one that they want to use or not.

There are certain computer repair shops that may have additional training over others. These shops will contain people who may have university degrees, diplomas and other professional training. There are computer programming courses that can be offered online or through home courses. It may be wise to find out what credentials someone has first.

Some shops have been around longer than others. These places may have more years of experience over other computer experts. Often it is the time spent working on different makes and models that can turn someone into a computer repair expert. Learning through hands on experience may have brought a reputation that is solid to a computer store.

Before any repair is performed, it may be beneficial to ask the technician what the price may be on the service call and repair. Sometimes a worker will know based on the computer’s symptoms what is wrong with the device. Knowing what is wrong, may help someone figure out the price and total time it could take to fix the issue.

With so many stores that fix computers available, it could be hard to know which one to pick. A great place will know how to fix the exact year and make of computer that is broken. A good question to ask a computer shop is what experience they have with the particular model and year that is needed. Some places will specialize in a certain type of computer company or a particular year. With some focusing on newer models and others specializing in later modeled computers.

There could be a repair person that will promise their work. It may be helpful to know that after a repair has been done and complete that there is some warranty through the repair and after it. Some places will back up their work and know that a quality repair job will be done in a satisfactory manner.

There are places that fix computers who will offer yearly memberships. A yearly fee could be given to the computer expert for availability anytime during the year. The idea of having a type of insurance on a computer system can make it easier to focus on day to day computer issues. When a huge issues comes up, it may not be a huge deal, because the person will know that they have coverage.

Questions to ask a computer repair technician when a home computer has broken down, could be based on the clients needs. Some people need a computer fixed quickly while others are okay with it taking a few days. The cost of the repair and experience of the computer worker may be valuable things to find out when working with a professional repair service.

Should I Repair or Replace My Computer?

As many people discover that they are having trouble with their computers, one question seems to come to mind when the case is quite serious. Should I repair or replace my computer? Both options are always on the table, no matter what, however we are going to be discussing why some options might better suite some situations. If you’re having PC trouble, read further.

You need to first ask yourself if the problem that you are having is hardware related. Keep in mind that hardware is much more expensive to replace or fix than software is. There are also some hardware repairs that would actually be much higher the actual cost of a new computer. Hardware issues typically result in a computer that won’t work at all.

It is important to consider that if your issue is software based, it might be very cost effective, as well as simple, to fix. The largest percentage of problems that are commonly reported have to do with software issues, and this typically involves the operating systems. Many malicious forms of software will damage you OS install. You simply need to reformat the hard drive, and then re-install the OS.

Another very important question that you need to be asking yourself is how old your computer really is. If your computer is quite outdated, it might just be time for an upgrade anyway. Keep in mind that if you computer is only a couple years old, you shouldn’t be in a really huge hurry to rush out and upgrade as soon as possible. If it is ten years old, you might.

Anytime that you are considering having a third party repair your PC, you need to strongly consider what the price of the repair is going to be. If the cost of the repair is much cheaper than a new PC, then the repair is obviously a good investment. If the two costs are rather close to each other, it might be in your best interest to just buy a new computer.

When it comes to picking a third party to repair your machine, always consider that local shops within most towns are quite expensive. Small businesses don’t get as much attention so they have to make a good amount of money from the people that do turn to them. When seeking repair services, you are going to want to stick with the larger level chains.`

When it comes to actually buying a new computer, keep in mind what we have already discussed about repair services. The largest chains are going to be your best bet, because you are going to get the most bang for the buck that you are spending. Some mom and pop operations can compete, but not very many. Their prices are typically much higher.

By now, the reader should be able to understand the answer to the question that was brought up earlier. Should I repair or replace my computer? There are several questions that apply to each situation, and answering them properly will help you answer this ultimate question. Some people might want to replace just for the heck of it. New computers are always fun!

Computers are venerable to viruses that impede their functioning. Maintaining a genuine and updated anti-virus software helps to keep a computer safe from the attacks of a big percentage of the existing viruses. However, there are viruses that have been observed to escape identification and removal by anti-virus software rendering computers venerable. Answering the question, what is a rootkit virus and how do I remove it may be the solution to this.

Most viruses can be easily detected hence, they are easy to remove once detected. Viruses often appear in computers and they spot names that are different from standard programs that have been installed. When a virus attacks a file and renames it, the new file changes the date of creation and the size of the file. This makes it easy to notice and correct the anomaly using an antivirus software. Rootkits are invisible therefore, extremely tricky to deal with.

Rootkit viruses are malware that attack computer programs and computer operating systems. A rootkit consists of a collection of programs that break the administrator’s barriers and expose the computer system to intrusions. This creates a backdoor through which foreign programs such as spyware and other types of viruses can gain access into the computer. Sometimes, once the rootkit is installed, it starts automatic downloads of other harmful programs into the computer system and any other computer in the network when the computer gets connected online.

Rootkits conceal the presence and operations of other viruses in the system hiding them from access by antivirus software. This tool hides all the processes and archives that are maliciously running in your system through the open intruder gates. These tools can be passed across networks like other types of viruses. They are mostly distributed through ads, free software downloads and email attachments.

Rootkits can be classified into various categories There are persistent rootkits which consist of a malware that activates every time the system boots or the user logs in. They have a consistent code that repeats itself each time the system is run. Memory based rootkits are do not contain a persistent code and are easily cleared through a reboot.

User-mode rootkits intercept all programs that assist a system to provide a list of all running programs on command. It may also change the listing details of a rogue program to evade detection. Kernel mode rootkits go beyond intercepting the listing programs to manipulating the kernel mode data structures to hide the malware completely. Management programs like Windows Task manager which rely on kernel data will therefore not display the hidden program.

Different tools are used to remove rootkits through different ways. Some tools are installed to intercept the backdoor created by the rootkill. It seizes all the new spyware and detects all other foreign files already in the computer and marks them for removal. Other tools are used to intercepts all system programs running a computer and display all the kernel services responsible for the programs and their sources.

Protection software can also be installed to constantly monitor all active programs and block any abnormal behaviors. Much more information on what is a rootkit virus and how do I remove it is available in various sites online.

Most people know someone that has encountered a computer virus if they haven’t experienced it themselves. It doesn’t take much to recall the anger and loss of privacy that characterize these situations. Who has not asked the question why do people make viruses? In the past, people tended to picture virus writers as these pale losers who hunched over computers in basements and generally lacked self-esteem. While this may have been true at the start, today the reasons people make malware and spyware seem to have more practical applications than simply feeling the rush of power. Here are a few common reasons behind this.

Money

What with the way people look for ways to make money online, It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to realize that writers of viruses would be looking for online options as well. Malware and spyware make it possible for an unscrupulous person to make money with less work. One of the more common ways for a person to make money writing viruses is by writing a program that masquerades as legitimate computer protection. People become alarmed at the number of detected viruses set up on their machines and buy the program that does nothing and continually needs to be renewed.

Steal Information

Identity theft is another motive for writing viruses. By swiping financial and other information, a virus writer can steal the information of a computer owner. It’s essentially a more technologically sophisticated method of watching for someone’s pin number and taking their card. Regardless of the reasons that a virus writer would want the information is another story, but simply by having the information a virus writer can learn more about you than you would like.

Controlling a Computer

Mostly for spamming purposes that can have roundabout financial applications. These programs will take a computer and set it up so that the writer has control over the computer and several hundred or thousand other. For a website that is able to protect itself very well in terms of hacking, the idea is to instead overload its servers. By taking over hundreds and thousands of computers, it is possible to have all of them try to access a site at once and by extension take it down. Other viruses won’t have this approach but will control the computers by having them send spam.

Because It’s Possible

Sadly, there are some people around who try to make life difficult for others simply because they can. It’s annoying. It’s inconvenient. But it’s also true. This individual is most like the common picture of a virus writer that exists in the popular mind. It’s not about a purpose but it’s about proving that it can be done. This writer will use all of the above methods in terms of what approach they will take. Fortunately this type of virus writer appears to be becoming more and more of an endangered species.

A virus infection is a stressful thing to have happen. Especially when you consider the extent to which we depend on our computers everyday. The reasons people make viruses are generally based on personal gain and unfortunately malware and spyware have gotten past being mild annoyances to computer users. Even though the day of the loser appears to have given way in favor of making profit, the methods and approaches still essentially work the same and computer users should remain on guard.

Computer Repair Laptop Repair

Heat problems can lead to a visit to your local computer repair shop.

Most people take for granted the fact that their laptop computer or desktop computer is getting enough ventilation to keep it from overheating or cause damage. In my computer repair business, I come across computers and laptops that have their cooling fans and heatsinks completely clogged. Some desktop cases are so bad that they have from small “dust bunnies” to enormous blobs of dust or pet fur.

The issue is that most computer owners suffer from the “out of sight, out of mind” syndrome and they simply forget that they need to periodically take an air can and blow the dust out of the inside and fans of their desktop computer or their cooling vents and fans on their laptop computers.

A Computer repair is frequently the result of dust and dirt.

A computer that is not cleaned periodically and accumulates debris restricting air flow thorough the cooling fans will begin to run hotter and hotter over time. The end result of this is what I refer to as “baking” the computer components. Electronic components do age, and heat accelerates this aging process and in the worst cases, leads to a thermal meltdown, essentially burning up the component.

In the case of a CPU on a motherboard, in general they have what is basically a thermal protection mechanism built in that will automatically shut down the computer when the CPU temperature gets too high. CPU cooling is frequently the problem when a computer repair job shows symptoms of simply turning off after either being on for a certain amount of time or when doing processor intensive tasks such as graphic editing, video playing or game playing.

Other components inside a desktop computer or laptop computer may not have a thermal protection mechanism and they will simply fail at some point from continued over heating.

A desktop computer is less costly to fix when a component needs to be replaced due to thermal failure, but a laptop repair can be costly.

Laptops contain many components integrated into the mainboard, or motherboard, which means that when any one of those components fails, it may require replacement of the entire board. Components that can fail easily from heat on a laptop are memory modules, which are not integrated in the mainboard in most laptops, graphic processors and memory, or GPUs, the main processor, or CPU, and several other components that control various interface processes. Replacing the mainboard in a laptop computer is probably the most costly repair that can be performed. In fact the cost of such a repair is often the deciding factor in whether or not one should pay that much for a repair or just invest in a new laptop computer. What is worse is that it may involve replacing not just the mainboard, but also the memory and possible the CPU as well thus driving up the repair cost even more.

Preventive maintenance can help avoid a costly computer repair.

The cost of repairs is why desktop computer and laptop computer owners need to take time and clean out their computer cooling and ventilation fans and heatsinks and make sure they are operating correctly. In the long run, performing routine cleaning can help extend the life of your laptop computer or desktop computer and help avoid the expense of a computer repair. Purchasing and keeping a compressed can of air that is for cleaning computers from your local office supply store and keeping it in your work area may help you remember to clean your laptop or desktop periodically.

However, cleaning is not the only precaution that should be addressed. Maintaining an unobstructed airflow to the devices air intake and exhaust grills are very important as well. In the case of a desktop, make sure that the air intakes are not blocked by any objects or surfaces placed too close to or against the ventilation of the desktop computer. The same goes for laptop computers with one additional suggestion. Always keep your laptop on a hard surface when using it. It is all too common for people to place laptops on their lap, on their bed, on their couch or other furniture that has a padded upholstered surface. Doing so restricts and often completely blocks air flow through a laptop causing it to run extremely hot and bake the components inside.

Desktop and laptop computers need to have good ventilation to help them operate efficiently and get the maximum lifetime out of them. Keep them clean, and keep their air intakes and exhaust clear of obstructions and it will help you get the most from your investment. The alternative may be a costly repair at a computer repair or laptop repair service provider.

Help Avoiding the Need for Computer Repair Service

Everyone needs computer help now and then. It is just part of owning a computer. But you can avoid computer problems by regularly performing your own computer maintenance. Even a computer hardware upgrade can be performed by most home PC computer users and they can save a lot of money by not having to pay for computer help or technical support.

Most computer problems arise from a computer virus infection, spyware, malware or ransomware infection. At our computer repair Arizona shop in Tucson the most common computer repair we need to perform is a computer virus removal, spyware removal, malware removal or all three at once. After that there are a myriad of computer hardware issues that we are called on for technical support, most of which could have been prevented through computer maintenance.

Here are a few tips to help avoid costly computer repair:

1. Keep your desktop or laptop computer clean and free from dust build up. When the dust accumulates on the air intakes, exhausts and various cooling fans, this leads to a reduction in the ability of the components to be cooled and may lead to failure. Simply taking a a can of compressed air that is readily available at most office supply stores or large discount chains and blowing the dust out of your desktop and laptop air intakes, exhausts and various cooling fans can help prevent computer problems from excessive heat. Granted, for most people it is not possible to open a laptop like they can a desktop tower, but using the air can to blow the dust out of the components through the grills on the outside of the laptop still helps.

2. Install a good anti-virus software and make sure that it stays updated. We recommend an update frequency of at least every 3 days or less. Some software is multi-purpose providing anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-spyware computer help in one package or suite of applications. The better ones can even detect and remove the dreaded rootkit virus infections. And some of them are even free. A software that meets all of these requirements is Avast! and it has a free version. Just in case something slips on to your system, we recommend scheduling your anti-virus software to do a complete scan once a week to check for infections or dormant computer virus files that could be activated and infect your computer and perform a computer virus removal.

3. Install additional anti-malware and anti-spyware software that you will run manually about once a week. The fact is, no matter how good a single software maker is, no one application catches every infection on a computer. We suggest to our clients that they use the freely available Superantispyware and Malwarebytes and run them manually once per week. As always, make sure to update these applications right before your run them to ensure you have the latest virus definitions installed.

4. Performing a computer hardware upgrade and avoiding the need to call technical support for computer help is much more of a possibility today for those using desktop computers. Laptop computers are much more difficult, and impossible in some situations. If you are thinking about upgrading your video card, memory modules, hard drive or adding additional components, you can find just about any tutorial or instructions on the Internet. Youtube is a great resource for instruction videos and best of all it is free computer help. Just make sure you understand the physical specifications of the upgrade you are planning to undertake so you make sure that you get a computer hardware upgrade component with the right connections.

5. Lastly, the environment that you use your computer in should be as clean as possible. Believe it or not, computers will suck in and concentrate on their internal components whatever is in the air or on the surface or floor on which they are placed. Cigarette smoke will infiltrate a computer system and build up a layer of sticky nicotine that will actually attract dust. Computers that sit on floors will suck in animal fur if present and create fur balls inside the computer. Computers in dusty desert region on the country suck in and build up a very fine dust layer very quickly. So be aware of your environment and if you are in one that lends itself to rapid buildup of material that will clog up you computer, then clean it our more frequently.

We hope you find these tidbits of information helpful in avoiding the need for a computer repair, calling for computer technical support, or asking you neighbor for computer help. Even computer virus removal can be done at home by most individuals. Thanks for reading, FireBall Tech Computer Repair Tucson, Arizona.
